It is easy to lose site of the real meaning of Christmas at this hectic time of year. Right now you probably are in the midst of the holiday frenzy; the parties, gift wrapping, holiday baking, and carding sending. The pressure seems to build as you fight the crowds to purchase that last gift or mail that last package. You stop and wonder, "Why do I go through this every year?"

But, there is a side of Christmas that goes beyond the tinsel, glitter, or commercialism. And if you are not careful you will miss it! It is seen in the eyes of a child as they see the Christmas Tree with all its presents. It is felt in the warmth of family and friends gathering around a fire or piano to sing Christmas Carrolls. It is seen in the smile of someone receiving an unexpected Christmas gift. This is the true meaning of Christmas.

Why is this time of year so special and why is this Holiday different from all the rest? Herein lies the true meaning of Christmas. It is the time of giving! It is the one time during the year that we as a Nation take time to think about others in a special way. True, everyone likes to receive gifts, but the real joy comes in giving them. For one brief period of time, we think of others and how to please them. It is when we take our eyes off ourselves and turn them on others that the true meaning of Christmas emerges. The joy of giving to others with no thought of having something given in return.

The true meaning of Christmas does not lie in tangible items, it lies in the act of giving. Giving of ones self to another to say for just a brief moment of time, "You are special! You are loved! You are appreciated!"

This Spirit of Christmas is not new. It was not thought of by some advertising firm to boost sales this year. It has its roots in a Manger, over 2000 years ago. When God gave the greatest gift of all, His Son, Jesus Christ. This is the ultimate gift, proclaimed by the Angels, "Glory to God in the Highest and on earth peace, and good will to all men!" This is the true meaning of Christmas!
